Description

What is love?

Le sauvetage (Rescue) portrays three women who all bear a resemblance to Marie-Thérèse Walter. Picasso met the young woman in 1927 and they soon became lovers. Reinhold Hohl interprets the picture as a variation upon the myth of Narcissus, who in Ovid’s Metamorphoses is said to have fallen in love with his own reflection. As he died, he transformed into the flower named after him.
