Description

Trees. A name for abstraction.

The Fondation Beyeler is currently presenting its second Calder Gallery (June 8, 2013 –January 12, 2014), organized in collaboration with the Calder Foundation. Under the title Trees – Naming Abstraction, this latest exhibition is devoted to a still unexplored facet of the artist’s oeuvre. The catalogue traces the steps by which Alexander Calder (1898–1976) arrived at the monumental stabiles and mobiles of his mature years. A foreword by Sam Keller and texts by Oliver Wick set out the background to this major phase in Calder’s career. The catalogue also focuses on designs that preceded The Tree (1966) in the Fondation Beyeler collection and on rare groups of Calder works produced between the 1930s and the 1950s. In 1933 Calder left Paris and settled in an old farmhouse in Roxbury (Connecticut), where he found new sources of inspiration in nature. The elements of motion and balance, so frequently represented in his work, assume a new significance in the context of nature. In Calder’s large-scale works, his translation of modernism’s pictorial abstraction into three dimensions makes an even greater impression upon the viewer.
