Description

Unerring simplicity

In his paper cut-outs (papiers découpés), Henri Matisse united the themes that had occupied him all through his life: color, light, form, space, and of course woman. His Blue Nude I of 1952 has been pared of all superfluous detail. Matisse has simply cut out colored pieces of pieces, combined them and stuck them together. Just blue on white. The seated woman has absorbed the elements of water and sky and gives back their reflection. At first sight, the work captivates us first and foremost as ornament. But its image is quickly registered and immediately assumes vibrant life. ANSICHTEN no. 6 discusses all four paper cut-outs by Henri Matisse in the Fondation Beyeler collection, and documents Matisse’s transition from oil painting to papiers découpés, the final phase in his artistic career.

ANSICHTEN no. 6 takes an in-depth look at the paper cut-outs Henri Matisse in the Fondation Beyeler. Detailed descriptions, technical data, special features, background information, and questions of interpretation all fall within the scope of this booklet.

ANSICHTEN is aimed at art lovers and teachers looking to engage in greater depth with the works of the Fondation Beyeler.

The journal also features a practical section, which presents ideas, tasks and experiments that may be carried out at the museum, at school or at home.

ANSICHTEN playfully provides readers with thorough knowledge of the works of the Beyeler Collection.
