Each work of art is an original which is part of what makes it so special. The disadvantage, however, is that the work cannot be in several places at once. As a way of allowing us to look at paintings outside as well as inside the museum, the Fondation Beyeler creates high-quality fine art prints of selected works. The masterpieces are printed on high-quality papers that are resistant to ageing. Find your favourite work in the Shop and enjoy it within your own four walls!
Balthus is viewed as one of the great masters of twentieth-century art, and is certainly one of the truly singular painters of his time. In his complex and multifaceted oeuvre, admired by some and spurned by others, he pursued an artistic approach that embodied an alternative, and a challenge, to modern avant-gardes. In his opposition to prevailing views, he refers to a whole range of art-historical traditions and precursors. Yet in his eccentric detachment from modernism, he developed his own specific avant-garde attitude, which now appears almost postmodern and contemporary.

Between 12 and 25 August 2024, we will be installing our next collection display (on view from 26 August) and our large Matisse retrospective (on view from 22 September).
During this time, the museum, the Art Shop and the «Beyeler Restaurant im Park» will remain closed. We look forward to welcoming you again once the installation work has been completed.
