Claude Monet began working on Le Grand Canal during a three-month stay in Venice. The picture is one of six views of Santa Maria della Salute and shows the church as seen from the Palazzo Barbaro on the other side of the Grand Canal. The six paintings were finished in Monet’s Paris studio following his return from Italy. Before showing the works in public for the first time in 1912, Monet made another trip to Venice and then decided to make no more changes to the series.
This limited-edition Art Print was created to mark the 2008/09 exhibition Venice – from Canaletto and Turner to Monet at the Fondation Beyeler. Hand-painted in gouache, using a set of 20 stencils, by the Atelier de coloris à la main (Ploubazlanec, France) on Arches 270 g/m², it is available in an edition of 150.
