A building with a history: the Berowergut
The building today housing the Berower Park Restaurant at the Fondation Beyeler museum was formerly part of the Berowergut, a country estate with a history going back almost 500 years. Nestling among the lush meadows outside Riehen, it is not hard to imagine that this was always a particularly lovely location. The estate has been home to many different owners. Most of those who lived here were prominent members of Basel society. This book delves into the Berowergut’s interesting past. Who were the people who left their mark on the Berowergut over the centuries? What influence did they exert on Basel’s politics, culture and economy? Life on the former feudal estate is recalled in a selection of memoirs. The Basel of the past is brought back to life in words and a generous selection of illustrations. The final chapter of the book is designed as a guide: with information on the house and garden, it takes the reader on a fascinating tour through a living piece of Basel history.
