What role did Eros play on the path to modernism?
The catalogue EROS, Rodin und Picasso unites two artists of different generations within one theme. Auguste Rodin paved the way for modern art with his sculpture. He deliberately broke with the rules in order to create something new. 40 years his junior, Pablo Picasso belonged to the next generation. What role did Eros play in their artistic works? What perspectives can we recognize in these works today? Erotic watercolors and sculptures by Rodin and a comprehensive range of works by Picasso provide the visual starting points from which to explore these questions. In-depth essays by Hélène Pinet, Christina Buley-Uribe and Fondation Beyeler curator Ulf Küster likewise set us firmly on our course to discover Eros in the work of Rodin and Picasso.
