Description

Image and poetry, freely associated

Inspired by doodles that he drew absentmindedly while talking on the phone, in the 1960s Jean Dubuffet developed a style hallmarked by seemingly random, extremely dynamic compositions of cell-like forms in the colors blue, red, white and black. Dubuffet’s interest in an art that is not guided by conventions was shared by his admirer and friend, the philosopher and poet Max Loreau. In his poems, Loreau sought a language free from social and ideological connotations. It therefore seemed only natural that they should collaborate on a joint work. Cerceaux ’sorcellent features 20 mostly full-page color screen prints by Dubuffet, which accompany poems by Loreau. The book was published in 1967 in an edition of 800 copies (750 + 50 h/c) by the Galerie Beyeler in Basel and the Galerie Jeanne Bucher in Paris.
