Untitled, 2018 (Portfolio)
In the summer of 2018, Lucas Arruda has accepted an invitation by Cahiers d'art to come to Paris and to work on several lithographs with the renowned American printer Michael Woolworth at his print shop near Bastille, resulting in a production of a beautiful portfolio pf prints presented in a fabric portfolio.
Lucas Arruda creates subtle representations of landscapes, real or imagined, or that make you think of other paintings. Neither ironic nor naive, Arruda's works are disarmingly factual, exploring the material, illusionist and evocative possibilities of colour. Arruda is in dialogue with a personalized history of painting that includes Turner and Corot, alluding to Rothko and Marden. The landscape is only one stylistic device in Arruda's work, the beginning of a deeper meditation on memory and loss, on history and abstraction. It is not the genre but the concept of landscape that is essential to Arruda, as it provides a setting and a place for the emotional intensity that is ultimately the true subject of these paintings.
