The Beyeler Collection unites some of the truly great masterpieces of classical modernism and is famous all over the world. It has found a worthy home in the museum building specially designed by Renzo Piano in Riehen, just outside Basel. The Fondation Beyeler is open to the public 365 days a year. Regular rehangings, combined with a continuous program of world-class exhibitions, ensure that the works in this art-historically significant collection remain fresh and relevant to new generations of art lovers. Ernst Beyeler’s desire to share his own passion for art has born magnificent fruit: since its opening, the Fondation Beyeler has welcomed every increasing numbers of visitors from all over the world.
All the artworks in the Beyeler Collection are individually discussed and illustrated in this Italian edition of the catalogue. In addition to works of Western art ranging from classical modernism to the present, the Beyeler Collection also includes important holdings of ethnographic art from Africa, Alaska and Oceania. A conversation with Ernst Beyeler conducted by Hans-Joachim Müller, and essays by Gottfried Boehm and Markus Brüderlin on classical modernism and on Renzo Piano’s architectural designs for the museum, provide a comprehensive overview of the Fondation Beyeler and the history of its foundation.
