Untitled [Captive/Figure of This World – Next World] from the Beyeler Collection is one of Paul Klee’s last works. The playful lightness of the lines that form themselves into faces, seemingly between laughter and fear, is married with a sense of severity in the grilles surrounding the figure. This foulard, which nestles gently around the neck, is made of top-quality silk georgette and feels soft and comfortable against the skin. The edges are finished in the intricate mano-macchina technique, combining machine and hand embroidery. The silk print reproduces the original painting in all its magnificent deep blues and greens.
