En route to a self-portrait

Peter Doig produced the etchings Horse and Rider I and Horse and Rider II while working on his large self-portrait Man on Horse, which was shown in 2014 at the Fondation Beyeler. The etchings were printed by Druckwerkstatt Lenzburg in collaboration with the artist in a signed and numbered edition of 30.

The etching Horse and Rider II was reworked with a second copper plate and is thus an overprinted version of the first print, Horse and Rider I. This process is typical of Doig’s printmaking. He often works on his plates and etchings in different techniques and takes several prints from them. The two Art Editions thus provide an insight into Peter Doig’s way of working.

Printmaking plays an important role in the Scottish artist’s creative process. Here he can explore his themes and develop ideas in an uninhibited manner. Doig’s prints captivate us with their innovative energy and bear witness to his inventiveness.
