Description

Gravity flies

The American sculptor Richard Serra is one of the leading representatives of Minimalism. His sculptural oeuvre in sheet steel primarily revolves around the concept of gravity. Heavy slabs of steel are propped against each other and brought into unshakeable equilibrium in positions that defy the logic of gravity.

The Art Edition Swivel was produced in conjunction with the Constantin Brancusi and Richard Serra exhibition held at the Fondation Beyeler in 2011. Drawing has been central to Richard Serra’s creative process from an early stage and is the basis upon which his sculptures are made. The Art Edition Swivel takes up the theme of torsion that has become an important aspect of Serra’s more recent steel sculptures.
