Think of ceramics and the name of Hedwig Bollhagen (1907–2001) will not be far away. In 2006 the Goethe Institute ranked her among Germany’s top ten women designers. After founding the HB-Werkstätten für Keramik in Marwitz, near Berlin, in 1934, she embarked on an unrivalled career, which earned her many awards during her lifetime. Her ceramic objects are hallmarked by the Bauhaus philosophy, which she implemented in her own signature style—as witnessed by her ceramic trinket boxes and cookie jars, which happily are still produced in strictly limited series by the Marwitz factory.
