Wade Guyton

The limited art editions Untitled (Untitled, 2024, Epson UltraChrome HDX inkjet on linen, 84 x 69 inches, WG5703) and Untitled (Untitled, 2024, Epson UltraChrome HDX inkjet on linen, 84 x 69 inches, WG5707) by American artist Wade Guyton are 1:1 reproductions of two of the 26 paintings featured in the Fondation Beyeler’s 2025 collection presentation. They are printed with vibrant, UV-resistant archival ink on cotton rag paper. The artist explains: “one image is of a painting that depicts the hardwood floorboards next to my printer. The other image is the scanned transparency film of an X painting I made in 2007.”

Since the 2000s, Guyton has been using printers to explore the traditional boundaries of painting. He investigates the conditions of abstract painting by questioning the process of image creation in the digital age. As Guyton states: “They are prints and not prints; photographs and not photographs; paintings and not paintings. The works are comfortable in this place of uncertainty. (…) How they are defined depends upon the point of view of the viewer.”
