Catalogue of the 2020/21 exhibition
Alongside our exhibitions «CLOSE-UP» (featuring works by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo) and «Goya», we invite you to the Fondation Beyeler to celebrate «Día de Muertos», the Day of the Dead. In Mexico’s indigenous tradition, on this day the dead are believed to return, joining the living in celebrating a happy reunion with music, dance and good food. A wonderfully spooky programme awaits you:
Festively decorated altars for the dead will be set up to welcome the spirits of the departed to the realm of the living. A light scent of incense and copal will hang in the air, underlining the museum site’s both festive and sombre atmosphere. A mariachi band and a DJ will be playing in the park of the Fondation Beyeler.
«Muertos de Obsidiana», a virtual reality installation by Felipe Fernández del Paso, will transport visitors to the realm of the dead. The renowned filmmaker and scenographer is known for his art direction on film classics such as «Desperado», «From Dusk Till Dawn» and «Frida». From 3pm until 5pm, children and adults will be able to design and adorn traditional sugar skulls, called «calaveritas de azúcar», at aworkstation in the park. The restaurant will serve classic Mexican dishes and drinks
On 30 October, the exhibitions «CLOSE-UP» and «Goya» will remain open until 10pm; access to the museum is included in the event ticket. Felipe Fernández del Paso’s virtual reality installation is on view up to and including 2 November.
On «Día de Muertos», museum visitors are warmly invited to dress up and don a costume!
"According to the GTC, admission to the event requires a valid Covid certificate (QR code). Should you be denied admission due to missing Covid certificate, unfortunately no refund of the ticket price is possible"
