Elizabeth Peyton. Here She Comes Now

Au cœur de l’exposition « CLOSE-UP » actuellement présentée à la Fondation Beyeler figurent neuf femmes artistes : Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Lotte Laserstein, Frida Kahlo, Alice Neel, Marlene Dumas, Cindy Sherman et Elizabeth Peyton. Elles ont ensemble écrit plus d’un siècle d’histoire de l’art. Leur contribution à l’histoire de l’(auto)portrait est particulièrement remarquable. Dans le cadre de cette exposition, vous trouverez à la boutique du musée des monographies choisies portant sur la vie et l’œuvre de ces femmes artistes exceptionnelles, ainsi que des anthologies consacrées au thème du portrait et des femmes dans le monde de l’art.

This publication groups together Elizabeth Peyton's portraits of musicians such as David Bowie, Pete Doherty, Jessye Norman and Jonas Kaufmann in moments of performance for the first time. Expressed in these portraits is Peyton's intensive focus on the vulnerable and at the same time expressive moment of artistic creativity: that moment in which the musician appears before their audience. As such the works are also a reflection on creativity per se and not least on Elizabeth Peyton's own creative process. The photographs, snapshots from live performances that underlie most of her works, are also shown and are presented in the exhibition catalogue alongside the artist's works and with equal weighting. The catalogue brings together oil paintings and works on paper from the last 20 years.
