Antes from head to foot
The German painter, printmaker and sculptor Horst Antes (*1936) was an early representative of the New Figuration trend in painting, which turned away from the prevailing current of abstraction in the post-war period. Following the example of Willem de Kooning, Antes combined figurative elements with aspects of Art Informel. Around 1960 he developed the famous cephalopod figure of the Kopffüssler (“head-footer”), which he has since varied and transformed in multiple ways and in different artistic techniques. This etching was created in 1968 and issued in a limited edition of 105 numbered and signed prints.
