On Disc 1 of this 2-disc DVD set, Ernst Beyeler (1921–2010) personally introduces us to 28 of the masterpieces in his collection. The famous gallery owner, collector, and founder of the Fondation Beyeler offers fascinating and often very entertaining insights into the paintings and sculptures that he assembled over several decades into one of the most important art collections in the world.
Disc 2 is devoted to the Fondation Beyeler museum designed for Ernst Beyeler by architect Renzo Piano. It explores the building and revisits the permanent collection and special exhibitions from the museum’s first ten years. It thereby becomes clear that, since opening its doors in 1997, the Fondation Beyeler has focused increasingly upon exhibitions of contemporary art.
In her film, director Edith Jud has captured very special moments from the life of Ernst Beyeler.
