To stand in front of originals and look at art one-to-one is always a very special experience. The Fondation Beyeler is devoting a comprehensive solo show to the internationally renowned artist Jeff Wall (b. 1946). It is the first such show of his work in Switzerland in almost two decades and has been created in close collaboration with the artist. Since the late 1970s Wall has contributed significantly to establishing photography as an autonomous medium and is regarded as the founder of “staged photography”. The Canadian mostly generates large-format photographs intricately and subtly composed from numerous individual shots: often inspired by daily life and art history, his images resemble carefully crafted film stills.
