What is art? That’s a tough question. Neither artists nor art experts have any quick and easy answers. But that is exactly what makes art so interesting and so rewarding. What is Art? 27 Questions and 27 Answers is aimed especially at young people who have already asked themselves this very question. Produced by the Art Education department at the Fondation Beyeler, it provides an entertaining introduction to the world of art.

The team of authors worked with students to compile a list of 27 questions that get straight to the point: why are some works of art so incredibly expensive? Is graffiti art? Why is the Mona Lisa so famous? The question-and-answer format makes it easy to dip in and out of the book, and the answers themselves are written a clear, straightforward style. Photographs by Andri Pol, showing people looking at art in a variety of real-life contexts, accompany the texts. The book also includes personal statements by a number of experts, each of them replying to the question What is art? Imagine you were asked to define art: what would you say?
