Between 1901 and 1904 Picasso produced a series of paintings, dominated by blues and bluish greens, on themes such as loneliness, poverty and hopelessness. This Blue period was succeeded by the Rose period, a two-year phase in which the young artist turned to motifs of a more cheerful nature, such as clowns, acrobats and harlequins, which he treated in a palette of reds, oranges and pinks. The Fondation Beyeler recently devoted an exhibition to Picasso’s Blue and Rose periods (3.2.–16.6.2019), and has also made the two colors the theme of a range of textiles. The high-quality tea towels, cushion covers and tote bags are made of 100% cotton by the traditional French weaving company, Tissage Moutet.
