On the occasion of the “Niko Pirosmani” exhibition, renowned contemporary artists Thea Djordjadze and Andro Wekua were invited to contribute to the presentation of Pirosmani’s works in Basel. Their two resulting installations offer a contemporary take on different aspects of Pirosmani’s art.

The Georgian-born, Berlin-based artist Andro Wekua attended art classes in his native Sukhumi from 1986 to 1991, while still a teenager. From 1993 to 1994 he studied at the Gogebashvili Institute in Tbilisi, and from 1995 to 1999 at the Visual Art School Basel. Since 2000 Wekua has exhibited his works both at home and abroad.

Wekua operates in a range of artistic media, including collage, painting, sculpture, installation and film. The Art Edition Untitled (2023), a silkscreen print in a limited edition of 50 copies, was created within the context of the current exhibition. Available exclusively at the Fondation Beyeler, each print is numbered and hand signed by the artist.
