Description

One motif seen in four different ways: the seated woman

Pablo Picasso is represented in the Fondation Beyeler collection by over thirty works. These include ten representations of seated women from his series Femmes assises. It is to them that this volume is dedicated, and in particular to Woman sitting in a Chair (1938), Woman in Green (1944) and the magnificent sheet-steel sculpture Woman with Hat (1961–63). In this last example, we follow Picasso’s path from pen- and-ink drawing to painting and finally to painted sculpture. How did Pablo Picasso proceed from initial idea to finished execution in sheet steel? What particular features can we identify about the way he worked? Seated women by Cézanne, Braque, Léger, Matisse, Dubuffet, and Giacometti are discussed in the context of Picasso’s works. The ‘Seated Woman’ was an important theme for the artists of classical modernism.

ANSICHTEN no. 4 takes an in-depth look at Pablo Picasso’s seated women. Detailed descriptions, technical data, special features, background information, and questions of interpretation all fall within the scope of this booklet.

ANSICHTEN is aimed at art lovers and teachers looking to engage in greater depth with the works of the Fondation Beyeler.

The journal also features a practical section, which presents ideas, tasks and experiments that may be carried out at the museum, at school or at home.

ANSICHTEN playfully provides readers with thorough knowledge of the works of the Beyeler Collection.
