Over the course of his career Paul Klee developed a supreme mastery in the handling of color. Drawing nevertheless remained integral to his artistic approach and he never ceased his exploration of line and form. His 1923 painting “Before the Lightning” in the Fondation Beyeler collection is an example of this: potent yet also very delicate, thanks to its filigree pencil lines and translucent watercolors, its motif is ideally suited for a scarf.
