Oloid - Shape Of The Future

In 1929, the Swiss sculptor, inventor and researcher Paul Schatz (1898–1971) discovered the geometric shape of the oloid. Schatz’s life’s work was shaped by this fundamentally new body, which emerged from movement, for which he continually found new and groundbreaking applications. This visually powerful and generally understandable monograph shows the timelessly beautiful Oloid as a source of inspiration and a functional element, today more than ever before.

This applies to the visual arts and design, to technology and research, to architecture, philosophy and music. Close aesthetic references to the sculpture of Paul Schatz’s contemporaries such as Naum Gabo, Constantin Brancusi and Henry Moore are as surprising as today’s homage to him by artists such as Ólafur Elíasson. The Oloid proves to be a universal body that – as simple as it is complex, at the same time elegant and powerful – has not yet revealed all of its secrets and potential.

With contributions by Dirk Böttcher, Andreas Chiquet, Heinrich Frontzek, Felix M. Hediger, Gerhard Heid, Tobias Langscheid, Vera Kopppehel, Walter Kugler, Matthias Mochner, Christoph Müller, Oliver Niewiadomski, Beate Oberdorfer and Tilo Richter as well as historical texts by Lucius Burckhardt and Paul Schatz.
